Best Homemade Carp Bait Recipes

Using a homemade carp bait is one of the best ways to hook into a huge carp. There are so many out there that it is often difficult to determine which ones are best. Carp are typically not that difficult to catch. I have caught several myself on bait as simple as a piece of bread or a quarter of a hot dog. But having the right carp bait will make things a lot easier on you. A good recipe will attract nearby carp and it will remain solid on the hook. Some homemade recipes tend to dissolve in the water when left out for a few minutes leaving you with a plain hook. Remember that different recipes work better than others depending on your demographics, so try a few out and see what works best for you.

Peanut Butter Ball

  • 1/2 cup of grits
  • 1 cup of peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup of flour
  • 2 slices of white bread

Simply mash it altogether and form a tight ball around your hook. This works wonders for me.

Breakfast Cereal

  • 1 cup of Wheaties – or really any other cereal will work just as well
  • 1 cup of flour
  • stir in a little honey and a 1/4 cup sugar
  • mix in a little hot water until you get the desired consistancy

 Koolaid Mixture

  • 1 cup of corn puffs
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 package of koolaid – any color works but I like red the best

Mix the ingredients and slowly add in hot water. Once you get a thick dough like texture stop adding water and work the paste. Remember you want it to be firm.

There are hundreds of different carp recipes out there but these ones tend to work the best for me. Some experiences anglers will add salt to the mixture as well as this is supposed to help attract carp. You can very the ingredients, some will work better than others depending on your location. I usually avoid any meat containing mixtures as I don’t think that they are necessary. Other ingredients you can mix in to the above recipes are: oats, nuts, bird seeds, bagels, cheese, cottage cheese, corn, and corn meal. Experiment a little and see what works best.

  1. The best carp bait
    1 banana smashed
    1/2 bottle of wheat germ
    1/2 box Wheaties
add Mogan David concorde wine till it makes a dough
take extra wine and cereals to thicken or thin it as needed.

  2. Hey guys awesome site…
I have one for the guys
Melies (bolied) hempseed bolied dog chunks .stale whole wheat brown bread and
Egg shells …(bolied eggs and raw)
A few bolies ( boiled lightly)
Mix with some water until paste ball effect..make decent balls and drop in few for feeding your hook area …good luck

    • No Mike- they can just be mixed in uncooked with the rest of the ingredients. What do you typically use to catch carp?

      • No luck with dough baits. I’ve tried Wheaties and strawberry pop, with fish floating within a foot of my cork, and no takers. Plus, like you mentioned, after about 30 minutes, the hook comes in bare. The bait dissolves. Past success has been with live bait: worm, grasshoppers and minnows. And that’s when I was fishing for other species. I have access to a pond near my home that has HUGE carp (25lbs+). I’m hoping for a little better success with your recipes!

  3. If you’re trying to fish off the top, you won’t catch many carp. When they feed they find something below them and go almost vertical to suck it in. Try this recipe and method next time.

    36 ounces of INSTANT grits
    1 cup of QUICK grits
    1 can cream style corn
    Flavor of choice

Mix everything together by hand and let sit 15-20 minutes.

Use Kix cereal with flavoring on the actual hook.
Pack the grits around the hook
Use 1/2 oz sinker on your setup

I fish tournaments in North Carolina.

    Catch a big one!

  4. The homemade bait that I use is dog food soaked in kool aid. You get some dry dog food, put it in a plastic sandwich bag with kool aid, and wait for it to get soft. I like to use this for carp feeding on the surface. You can also just soak the dog food in water.

  5. i raise black soldier fly larvae, looks like big maggot. best bait 2 catch any fish almost.
going 2 try in some of yalls dough bait. going cat fishing next weekend, going 2 catch some carp 2 feed my bugs. biggest carp I caught 48 pounder. thanks 4 this site. Lake Travis Texas.

  6. Love fishing for these things. Found a city pond that has what I call the standard carp plus some idiot turned. These things are very large now. Question on the peanut ball would peanut butter, wheaties, flour work as well or do you need the bread to hold it together better.

  7. Awesome recipes and ideas. Moving to Buulhead City Arizona. Full of nice big beautiful Carp in the Colorado. Great big healthy Carp, not the usual big fat muddy Carp. This should be cool !! Thanks !!

  8. Quick homemade Carp dough

Take 2 pieces of bread, spread peanut butter on 1 slice, like ur making a sandwich.
Cover the peanut butter slice of bread with oatmeal and sprinkle with sugar.
Pick up and mash all together until mixed well. Place in a zip lock bag. Ready to go!
Place the other slice of bread on top and sprinkle with vanilla extract

  9. One I like to use and easy to make.
I use the off-brand captn crunch. The one in a bag becausec its cheaper. Put into a mini chopper or blender and bring it to a powder. Some larger chunks are normal and ok. I make about 2 cups at a time. Add vanilla extract slowly and work by hand until nearly a heavy dough. Add a few pinches of salt and finish out with corn syrup until well mixed. Let sit for 10 min until it toughens up then pinch off a dime size piece and mash on hook or roll into balls.

  10. here’s a neat trick : wrap your bait around a SHARPend treble hook and cover the whole mess in a nylon stocking or cheese cloth . the barbs can poke thru a tiny bit . tie the nylon at the hook shank with mono filiment line. No more lost bait .. Ever.

  11. ,,, a square Piece of nylon or cheese cloth I should have said .. maybe 2 inches square or so .. Leave enough to tie it around the hook shank :-))

  12. Hi gents, thanks for this blog, it is nice to try new recipes from time to time..

In your bait ball, some soaked high protien puppy pellets, high protein cereal and some flour and a pinch of salt.
Your hook bait (Dough) warm up water DONT BOIL IT, add half a teaspoon of white sugar and a very small pinch of protein powder and red flouro powder. Once sugar and other ingredients have dissolved use that water to make a dough. Place the dough on the Hook as to look like a worm.

protien and red fluoro = “worm”

  13. Take one single corn pop. Hook it an make a ball out of instint mashed potatos with vanilla for suck off arond it leave a five inch leader an fish…

  14. Another great bait:
    1) Place a sugar pop in you hook.
    2) Take a whole piece of bread and fold it over the hooked sugar pop.
    3) Holding hook and all in hand quickly dip hand into water and pull it out and then squeeze bait back on hook to make sure it stays on.
    4) Then cast out gently and try to avoid stopping your line mid cast because this will make your bait fly off, and do not use a bobber for this bait it causes the bait to dissolve faster.

  15. Luncheon meat cut into cubes then place in a plastic food bag along with chilli powder twist the bag and give it a good shake these catch untold amounts of carp also I like to fry them a little just to harden the edges to keep the meat on the hair
